Saturday Throw-a-Pot Session

  • Inspired by Pottery Throwdown and fancy throwing your own pot?

    Join us for an hour of pot throwing fun guided by our fantastic Master Potter, Jon French.

    After a brief demonstration, this 1 hour session gets you straight on the wheel for an unforgettable experience where you can learn how to throw pottery whilst assisted by our wonderful tutors.

    You don’t need any experience at all as this session is aimed at complete beginners of all ages.

  • We can accommodate up to 10 people can be booked per session

    Included is the cost to glaze and fire one pot per person, however most students do throw a few pots. During the session choose your favourite pot that will then be fired and glazed.

    Any additional pots can be fired at the cost of £5 per pot and can be purchased when booking or at the session.

    The glazing and firing process of all pots takes approximately 4-6 weeks.

    Notification regarding collection will be via email as soon as completed.

    Although not recommended due to the delicate nature of ceramics, delivery is possible at an additional cost via APC

  • Jon French is a Master Potter and has been working in ceramics and teaching for over 37 years. Jon’s patient and friendly teaching manner enables beginners of all abilities to throw the most wonderful creations.

    Jon is joined in the studio by Rae Downey, who runs her own pottery studio at Spode. Rae is renowned in the area for her range of handcrafted ceramics.

  • Location:
    All of our courses will be held at our studio in Fenton, Stoke on Trent.

    Equipment provided:
    Disposable aprons and towels will be provided for your course.

    Ceramic Firings:
    Included in the cost is glazing and firing of one pot. You can purchase additional pot firings when booking the course or during the session. Please note that if you select pots to be fired, they are chargeable regardless of if they make it through the process or if you change your mind once the process has started. Please allow 4-6 weeks for your work to be fired following your course, we will be in touch via email to inform you when the work is ready. Please also note that with any type of ceramics there is always a risk that your item might not make it through the firing process.

    Payment Terms:
    Course fees are payable at the time of booking. We reserve the right to refuse attendance on the course if payment is not received prior to the course date.

    Name transfer:
    You can transfer your place on the course at any time prior to the course start. No charge will be made for this providing there is no change to the course or date.

    Cancellations by you:
    Should you need to cancel your booking your cancellation must be received in writing at least 14 days prior to the event. A full refund will be made of any fees paid. We are unable to process a refund for cancellations received less than 14 days prior to the event.

    Cancellations by us:
    Should it be necessary due to reasons beyond our control to cancel an event then our liability is limited to a full refund of the event fee paid.

    Transfering Course Dates:
    Should you need to transfer your booking date you will need to contact us in writing at least 14 days prior to the event. Within this period we will be able to rearrange your course date. We are unable to change your date when notice is received less than 14 days prior to the event.

    Course Suitability:
    Whilst we are happy to offer advice for each course, which is for guidance only, it remains the responsibility of the delegate to decide whether a course is deemed suitable for them. All bookings are taken subject to these conditions.

    Photography Disclaimer:

5 Week Evening Beginners Course

  • Join our evening pottery course led by our Master craftsman Jon French, and develop your throwing skills and ceramic knowledge whether a beginner or someone with a little more experience.

    Over the 5-week course, Jon will show you in detail how to:

    Throw
    Turn
    Decorate
    Glaze
    Fire

    There are a maximum of 10 places available per session.

    Sessions run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30-8.30pm.

    Sessions are very popular and get booked up very quickly!

    PLEASE NOTE: The next block of courses start on Tues 26th March and Thurs 28th March, but break the following week (on Tues 2nd and Thurs 4th April) for our annual Easter Shutdown. The 2nd week of the course then restarts on Tues 6th and Thurs 8th April for the remaining 4 weeks.

  • You will be allocated your own potters wheel and given one to one assistance from the tutor to help you to develop your ideas.

    Basic materials, aprons, clay and tools will be provided.

    A maximum of two small pots or one medium per session are included within the cost for firing.

    Additional pot firings can be purchased if required.

  • This 1 day course, which will be run by Master Potter Jon French, is an opportunity to have a one to one experience for those who would love to learn how to throw with clay.

    Our 1 day beginners courses run on various Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year from 10am to 4pm.

    This full day course will give you knowledge of how to:

    Preparing the clay (wedging)

    Centre the clay

    Throw cylinders with the aim of producing forms of even thickness

    Developing basic forms

    Wiring pots off the wheel

    At the end of the course, you will then have the choice of up to 2 pots that will be glazed and fired.

  • Clay, aprons, and tools are provided.

    Access to refreshments such as tea, coffee and water are available throughout the day.

    We ask that you bring a packed lunch.

    At the end of the course, you will then have the choice of up to 2 pots that will be glazed and fired or you can purchase additional pots for £5 each.

    There are a maximum of 8 places available with each student having their own wheel for use throughout the day.

  • Fancy learning how to be a potter?

    This wonderfully inspiring 2-day course, is ran by Jon French, a Master Potter of over 37 years.

    It is perfect for anyone who would love to learn how to throw and finish a clay pot and is suitable for complete beginners or anyone with existing knowledge who wishes to improve their skills.

    This day course consists of:

    DAY 1

    Prepare clay (wedging and kneading)
    Centre the clay

    Making marbled designs with clay and coloured slips
    Wiring pots off the wheel

    DAY 2

    Trimming pots on the wheel from day 1
    Making handles
    Carving designs
    Using coloured slips for decoration

    At the end of the course, you will then have the choice of up to 2 pots that will be glazed and fired.
