Duration: 1 day course
Dates: Saturday 7th December
Time: 9.30am – 4pm
Price: £120 (including lunch)
Teacher: Lindy Martin
This workshop is open to all from beginners to professionals.
The goal for the day is to build a teapot, cup and saucer; the essence of the day is to have a lots of fun, loosen up and put some character into your work.
Following two years at evening classes Lindy gave up her job and did a Ceramics degree at Carmarthen School of Art. She has never been the sort of person to follow rules and have a strong tendency to question and experiment.
So her building method is one that she worked out by herself. She chose teapots because at the first evening classes she went to making a teapot seemed to be the ultimate symbol of mastering the hand building techniques she was taught. At college she tried many different styles and knew that her interest lay in the sculptural narrative based work, not really interested in functional ceramics. But as she was doing ceramics rather than sculpture she eventually returned to traditional ceramic forms to express the narrative element.
Bringing character into traditional forms involves observation of the human figure, posture, body language, fashion and communication; in short, people watching.
During the workshop you will be using basic plaster press moulds, a variety of kitchen equipment, hand building tools and your wildest imaginings! So come along and turn your pots into people, turn people into pots, personalise your work and tell a story. If nothing else you will have a lot of fun, exchange ideas with other potters and get to have a good look round Valentine’s fabulous workshop and gallery.
Clay and tools will be provided, although you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer. Your pots will be fired at the centre and there will be a follow up session run by Valentine’s to decorate and glaze fire them. If you cannot attend this session then it is possible to take them home and use acrylic paints to finish your design although this will only be purely for decoration and cannot be used.

The price for a 1 day course with Lindy Martin is £120 per person
Lindy chooses to make the everyday forms of the tea set to tell a story of our lives and relationships. Historically tea sets were often never used but stayed on display, a reflection of the life and aspirations of the collector. Her pots have come off their shelves, out of their cupboards and tell their own stories.
Lindy’s work is always hand built and does not hide the marks which show how it was made. The material is not disguised either, she likes to let the clay have a say in its form and texture and choose firings in which the actions of the flames make their own marks.
Often she will include muds and crushed rocks from the area to add to the clay or for surface decoration.
Lindy’s aim is to make work that reflects the landscape, revels in its own materiality and intrigues the viewer with the possibilities of a narrative.
She graduated in 2014 with a First Class Honours Degree in Ceramics from Carmarthen School of Art
Lindy is also a registered artist with Gofal Celf a charity promoting community projects with artists.
