Saturday Throw-a-Pot Session

  • Inspired by Pottery Throwdown and fancy throwing your own pot?

    Join us for an hour of pot throwing fun guided by our fantastic teachers Rae & Sarah.

    After a brief demonstration, this 1 hour session gets you straight on the wheel for an unforgettable experience where you can learn how to throw pottery whilst assisted by our wonderful tutors.

    You don’t need any experience at all as this session is aimed at complete beginners of all ages.

  • We can accommodate up to 10 people can be booked per session

    Included is the cost to glaze and fire one pot per person, however most students do throw a few pots. During the session choose your favourite pot that will then be fired and glazed.

    Any additional pots can be fired at the cost of £5 per pot and can be purchased when booking or at the session.

    The glazing and firing process of all pots takes approximately 4 weeks.

    Notification regarding collection will be via email as soon as completed.

    Although not recommended due to the delicate nature of ceramics, delivery is possible at an additional cost via APC

    All of our courses will be held at our studio in Fenton, Stoke on Trent.

    Equipment provided:
    Disposable aprons and towels will be provided for your course.

    Ceramic Firings:
    Included in the cost is glazing and firing of one pot. You can purchase additional pot firings when booking the course or during the session at the cost of £5 per pot. Please note that if you select pots to be fired, they are chargeable regardless of if they make it through the process or if you change your mind once the process has started. Please allow 3 weeks for your work to be fired following your course, we will be in touch via email to inform you when the work is ready. Please also note that with any type of ceramics there is always a risk that your item might not make it through the firing process.

    Payment Terms:
    Course fees are payable at the time of booking. We reserve the right to refuse attendance on the course if payment is not received prior to the course date.

    Name transfer:
    You can transfer your place on the course at any time prior to the course start. No charge will be made for this providing there is no change to the course or date.

    Cancellations by you:
    Should you need to cancel your booking your cancellation must be received in writing at least 14 days prior to the event. A refund will be made which will total the full amount paid less 5% to cover our payment merchant fees. We are unable to process a refund for cancellations received less than 14 days prior to the event.

    Cancellations by us:
    Should it be necessary due to reasons beyond our control to cancel an event then our liability is limited to a full refund of the event fee paid.

    Transfering Course Dates:
    Should you need to transfer your booking date you will need to contact us in writing at least 14 days prior to the event. Within this period we will be able to rearrange your course date. We are unable to change your date when notice is received less than 14 days prior to the event.

    Course Suitability:
    Whilst we are happy to offer advice for each course, which is for guidance only, it remains the responsibility of the delegate to decide whether a course is deemed suitable for them. All bookings are taken subject to these conditions.

    Photography Disclaimer:
    Please note that on occasion photography and/or filming may take place during a course, workshop or event and material from this may be used publicly for marketing or social media purposes. Parents/carers of children are required to complete a photography disclaimer form – please speak to a member of staff regarding this.

    Ceramic Firings:
    Please allow 3 weeks for your work to be fired following your course, we will be in touch via email to inform you when the work is ready. Please also note that with any type of ceramics there is always a risk that your item might not make it through the firing process.

    Gift Cards:
    Our gift cards are valid for 12 months from the date stated on the voucher (after this date the voucher is no longer valid).   • Clay As You Go

    A relaxed, flexible 2.5-hour studio session designed for makers with some experience who want the freedom to develop their skills at their own pace.

    These sessions are ideal for those wanting extra wheel practice, space to work on personal projects, or time to explore new techniques without committing to a full course.

    There’s no formal lesson just supportive supervision, access to our studio tools, and the freedom to make in your own way.

    Alongside the making, Clay As You Go is a lovely way to become part of our growing clay community. Share the studio with like-minded makers, swap ideas, gain inspiration, and enjoy the relaxed, social atmosphere that naturally forms when potters come together.

    Bookable weekly.
    You are welcome to book sessions in advance as often or as little as you like.

    PLEASE NOTE:
    These sessions are not suitable for complete beginners. Attendees should have a basic understanding of throwing or hand-building.

    Perfect for returning students and confident hobby makers looking for extra studio time and a friendly creative community.

  • Session Time
    Clay As You Go includes a 2.5 hour self-led studio session, giving you your own dedicated potter’s wheel and the freedom to work independently at your own pace.

    Support
    You will have support from Sarah Derbyshire throughout your session, offering equipment help, safety guidance, and general advice, though no formal teaching is provided.

    Clay Provided
    Each booking includes 4kg of B17C Stoneware clay, which you are free to reuse and recycle during your session as needed.

    Studio Tools
    You will have access to all studio tools and communal equipment, allowing you to focus on developing your skills and working on your personal projects.

    Specialist Clays
    Standard and specialist clays are also available to purchase in the studio.

    Firing Services
    Firing services are offered at an additional cost, including both bisque and glaze firing, with simple size categories to choose from starting at a cost of £3

    Glazes
    Glazes can be purchased separately and are priced per 100ml, giving you flexibility in finishing your work starting from £2 per 100ml.

    Workspace & Cleaning
    A clean and fully prepared workspace is provided, along with a clear cleaning guide to follow during the final ten minutes of your session.

Suitable participants include graduates of the Love Clay 6-week course, attendees of the Love Clay 2-day beginner course, or individuals with prior external experience in wheel throwing or hand building. Participants must understand basic ceramic health and safety, follow studio etiquette, and be able to work independently without tuition. If you are unsure about your suitability, please contact us before booking, as determining suitability is the responsibility of the participant.

    Cleaning

    The final 10 minutes of each session are dedicated exclusively to cleaning. Participants are responsible for cleaning their wheel station, tools, and surrounding or communal areas as required. Wet cleaning only is permitted, using a sponge, water, and the studio hoover. Dry sweeping or use of a dustpan and brush is not allowed. Workspaces must be left as shown in the studio setup guide. Failure to follow cleaning rules may result in refusal of future bookings.

    Storage of Work

    Ceramics may only be stored while awaiting firing or turning. Long-term, abandoned, or unclaimed work cannot be stored, and uncollected items may be disposed of after a reasonable collection period.

    Firing & Glaze Charges:

    Firing is optional and charged from £3, covering both bisque and glaze firing. Glazing materials are available from £2 per 100ml. Work may not be fired if the base is glazed, pieces are not sponged correctly, or the piece is not clearly named/stamped. All firing charges apply, and firing categories (Small, Medium, Large) and prices are subject to change based on kiln energy data. There is always a risk of loss or damage during firing, and Love Clay cannot be held liable for breakages.

    Session Format:

    Each session lasts 2.5 hours and is entirely self-led, with no structured teaching or demonstrations. A staff member will be present to offer equipment support, provide health and safety guidance, and give general advice. Participants requiring continuous guidance should book a taught course rather than a drop-in session.

    Materials & Clay Use:

    Each session includes 4kg of B17C stoneware clay, which may be reused during the session. Optional specialist clays are available for an additional charge per 4kg block from £5 with additional clay types potentially varying weekly. Only clay purchased from Valentine Clays may be used in the studio, and only Valentine Clays clay will be fired.

    Firing & Glaze Charges:

    You may transfer your booking to another person at any time free of charge, provided the session type and date remain the same. Delegate suitability remains your responsibility, and no refunds are issued if an attendee is found unsuitable on arrival. If you need to cancel or change your booking, email notice must be received at least 7 days before the session. Refunds will be issued minus a 5% merchant fee. No refunds or changes can be made within 7 days of the session, and missed sessions cannot be refunded or rescheduled.

    Storage of Work:

    We can store ceramics only while awaiting for turning or firing. Long-term, abandoned, or unclaimed work cannot be stored due to space limitations, and uncollected items may be disposed of after a reasonable collection period.

    Photography & Media:

    Photography or filming may take place during sessions for marketing purposes. Please notify us if you wish to opt out. For participants under 18, parent or guardian consent is required.

    Liability

    Love Clay accepts no responsibility for damage to personal belongings or work created during sessions, breakage during firing, or suitability of participant knowledge or skill level. Makers are fully responsible for the safe and appropriate use of all tools and equipment.

    Acceptance of Terms:

    By booking or attending a drop-in session, you confirm that you understand the session format, meet the eligibility requirements, agree to abide by studio etiquette and cleaning rules, and accept all Terms & Conditions set out above.

6 Week Beginner Throwing Course

Mon Evenings

  • Join our daytime ceramic course led by the pottery dream team, Rae Downey and Sarah Derbyshire, and develop your ceramic skills and knowledge. You will have a chance to develop your skill on the pottery wheel.

    Over the 6-week beginners course, Rae & Sarah will show you in detail how to:

    • Throw

    • Turn

    • Decorate

    • Glaze

    There are a maximum of 10 places available per session.

    During week 5 & 6 you will be able to glaze up to 6 medium-sized pots, please allow for up to 2 weeks for bisque firing. 

    Sessions will run on Mondays and Tuesdays 6-8.30pm

    PLEASE NOTE: The sessions are either Mondays or Tuesdays, not both and not interchangeable.

  • You will be allocated your own potters wheel and given one to one assistance from the tutor to help you to develop your ideas.

    Basic materials, aprons, clay and tools will be provided.

    Clay, storage and firing is restricted.

Although we do not wish to cull creativity, please be mindful of other students and that storage space is limited and shared amongst many courses. We will also not be allowing students to take away pieces and bring them back for firing. We will only be firing creations made during the sessions. Only pieces made in the class will be eligible for firing.

    Name Stamps
    All creations for firing must be clearly marked with your name. Any unstamped or marked will not be fired.

    Sponging and Glazing
    All creations must be sponged and bottoms unglazed or will not be fired. Too many of our shelves are being damaged by creations with glazed bottoms.

    Ceramic Firings:

  • Unleash your creativity with clay in our 6-week Ceramics Course at LoveClay – the perfect introduction for beginners or those wanting to develop their pottery skills.

    Guided by our expert tutor, Sarah Derbyshire, you’ll explore the many different ways of working with clay in a friendly, supportive, and inspiring environment.

    Each week you’ll enjoy a 2.5-hour session dedicated to developing your ceramic skills and knowledge through a variety of methods – from throwing on the wheel to handbuilding, coiling, pinch pots, and slab building. You’ll also get to refine your skills by turning your thrown pieces, experimenting with decoration, and experiencing the glazing process to bring your work to life.

    Over the 6 weeks you’ll learn and develop:

    • Throwing on the wheel – including turning, decorating, and glazing (up to 6 medium-sized pieces)

    • Handbuilding techniques – pinch pots, coiling, and slab building (both wet and leather-hard)

    • Personal development – time to experiment with your own ideas and style with one-to-one guidance

    • Finishing processes – including glazing and firing (please allow up to 2 weeks for bisque firing)

    With just 10 places available, this small-group course ensures plenty of individual attention and the chance to grow your confidence and creativity each week.

  • This Ceramic Evening course is ideal for any ability from beginners to those that have some ceramic experience but would like to learn to develop their ideas over a 6 week period.

    Whichever clay discipline you wish to develop and learn experienced potter Alex Shimwell will be on hand to help you to progress within this area whether you would like experience in throwing, slabbing, texturing, decorating or firing.

    Alex specialises in throwing large pots and glaze creation.

    This is an extremely popular course and is limited to 10 spaces per session.
    Alex Shimwell’s course runs on Wednesday Evenings from 6.30-9pm

  • You will be allocated your own potters wheel and given one to one assistance from the tutor to help you to develop your ideas.

  • Wednesday Evenings - Alex Shimwell.
    Alex is a talented ceramicist with technical knowledge that is second to none.
    He originally studied ceramic design at Staffordshire University, and has since travelled to Japan, spending time with Numaguchi-San, a 7th generation Jomo ware potter, learning traditional techniques and researching the aesthetic ideas that informed traditional British studio ceramics.

    All of our courses will be held at our studio in Fenton, Stoke on Trent.

    Equipment provided:
    Disposable aprons and towels will be provided for your course.

    Clay provided:
    Clay will be provided for use in the class. Should students require any other specific clay, it must be purchased seperately through Valentine Clays website at least 24 hours before required or at the Valentine Clays counter before your session. Please note that ordering before your session may take time to process and supply and neither LoveClay or Valentine Clays are responsible for organising additional clay to reach you in time for your session if not ordered in a timely manner. Please note, we will only fire pieces in our kilns made with clay from Valentine Clays.

    Storage
    Storage per student is limited throughout the 5 weeks. Although we do not wish to cull creativity, please be mindful of other students and that storage space is limited and shared amongst many courses. During the course your ceramic creation will be stored on your own labelled shelf. We will also not be allowing students to take away pieces and bring them back for firing. We will only be firing creations made during the sessions. Only pieces made in the class will be eligible for firing.

    Name Stamps
    All creations for firing must be clearly marked with your name. Any unstamped or marked will not be fired.

    Sponging and Glazing
    All creations must be sponged and bottoms unglazed or will not be fired. Too many of our shelves are being damaged by creations with glazed bottoms.

    Ceramic Firings:

Pottery Throwing for Beginners in Staffordshire

1 Day Beginner Throwing Workshop

  • This 1 day course, which will be run by our fantastic teachers Rae & Sarah, is an opportunity to have a one to one experience for those who would love to learn how to throw with clay.

    Our 1 day beginners courses run on various Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year from 10am to 4pm.

    This full day course will give you knowledge of how to:

    Preparing the clay (wedging)

    Centre the clay

    Throw cylinders with the aim of producing forms of even thickness

    Developing basic forms

    Wiring pots off the wheel

    At the end of the course, you will then have the choice of up to 2 pots that will be glazed and fired.

  • Clay, aprons, and tools are provided.

    Access to refreshments such as tea, coffee and water are available throughout the day.

    We ask that you bring a packed lunch.
